Carolyn and David Hinske maintain working studios in Memphis, Tennessee and Taos, New Mexico.

Carolyn

Carolyn's wearables are acquired internationally and have been exhibited at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens and the Tennessee State Museum.

Artist's Statement:

As a child I began sewing with my Grandmother and Mother.  This began a lifelong love of fabrics.  Two of my most popular designs are the simple and classic silk scarf and the versatile ruana wrap.  Most recently I been working with the ancient Oriental techniques of shibori, which involves wrapping, stitching, and pleating fabric, and then hand dyeing it.  I also use block printing and discharge methods to embellish my fiber pieces.

Hand-formed bead necklaces and earrings have been a part of my art since 1993. Working with hand-tooled metal and integrating different metals and stones with my clay jewelry has taken me down a new path.

The Southwestern United States has had a great impact on my designs.  The rich and glorious colors of the landscape and open sky of New Mexico have been an inspiration to my work.

I hope that people who view and wear my designs will sense the Navajo philosophy I incorporate in each piece and "walk in the Beauty Way."

David
